Opened in November, 2004 on a 15-acre site at the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, the 305,000- square-foot Steiner Studios provides New York City with its first Hollywood-style (and scale) production and support facility.
Designed to the specifications of producers and facility operators in Los Angeles, and supported by top New York artistic talent, Steiner Studios is a full-service, state-of-the-art "production factory," equipped for start-to-finish production of major motion pictures, independent films, television, broadcast commercials and music videos.
As the largest and most sophisticated studio complex outside of Hollywood, Steiner Studios offers five soundstages - including the largest (27,000 square feet) on the East Coast - ample office and support space, and parking for 1,000 vehicles.
Addressing the ongoing, unmet demand for film and television production facilities in New York, Steiner Studios has helped to boost NYC's position as a world-class entertainment production center.
Space to Grow New York's Film Production Industry
Newly built from the ground up, Steiner Studios offers production professionals 100,000 square feet of spacious, unobstructed soundstages suitable for the most ambitious productions, with state-of-the-art air conditioning and power infrastructure, and an additional 215,000 square feet of offices, dressing and make-up rooms, mill shops, spray booths, prop lock-ups, etc. All sound stages are equipped with a full grid and catwalk system. Office and support spaces have access to satellite uplinks and a high-speed data backbone.
Soundstages, with a towering 35 to 45 foot grid height, are column-free, sound-insulated, and offer unsurpassed loading and staging areas. Built to accommodate film, high-definition television (HDTV) and digital camera productions, each stage is 120 feet wide, wired with a minimum of 9,000 amps of power and 150 to 200 tons of cooling. Stages are accessed via 20 foot high by 28 foot wide elephant doors.
Each stage is attached to production and support space, including make-up and dressing rooms, green rooms, storage areas, conference rooms and offices. In addition to the enclosed building areas, there are ample assembly and secondary areas for "lay-down" of materials and equipment used in large-scale film projects.
The facility also features a 100 seat screening room and a full commissary, with dining and catering services available on soundstages, in offices and on location.
Full-Service Production Center
To significantly reduce production and transportation costs, Steiner Studios offers a range of production equipment and services on-site, including a complete inventory of film and television lighting and grip equipment, scenery and props, design and fabrication services and post-production facilities.
Rich, Historic Back-lot
Steiner Studios is located at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, situated along the East River and flanked by the Williamsburg Bridge on the north and the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges on the south.
The Navy Yard offers beautiful and unique vistas of the Manhattan skyline, the nearby bridges and an active waterfront--an ideal location for large-scale media production. The Yard also comprises a rich, historic back-lot, with buildings preserved from the Civil War and World War II, and an open campus environment with winding drives, expansive fields and abundant landscaping. Consistent with its past use, the campus offers 24-hour monitored security, secure access and parking. Its 265 acres provide abundant space for future growth, and the entire complex is convenient to airports, Manhattan and the greater metropolitan area.
Location
While Steiner Studios is housed within the walled enclave of the Navy Yard, just beyond its gatehouses lie the communities of Williamsburg (New York City's arts and creative center), Clinton Hill and Fort Greene.
Accessible 24 hours per day, the Brooklyn Navy Yard facility offers a private, enclosed back-lot production environment and waterfront access to piers.
